उकडिचे मोदक
कहानी
Modak’s association with Ganesha is old enough that it shows up in traditional stories and iconography of the deity, often depicted holding one in his hand or trunk, and it’s considered his favorite sweet, which is why no Ganesh Chaturthi celebration is complete without it. The steamed version, ukadiche modak, is specifically a Maharashtrian tradition, distinct from the fried modak variants found in sweet shops and from the North Indian custom of offering laddoo instead. The rice-flour shell and coconut-jaggery filling reflect Maharashtra’s coastal and agrarian food traditions, coconut and jaggery being staple sweeteners and flavors across the region long before they became specifically tied to this festival dish.
